Whites Nurseries, established since 1940.
Whites Nurseries began as a small business established by Philip White in the 1940s. He set up his business in a greenhouse behind the family home in West Street, Earls Barton, a tiny village just outside Northampton.
With Philip’s hard work it soon developed into a successful local business selling fruit and vegetables to local people and businesses. As the company grew, it became too big for the back garden and Philip moved to Doddington Road in the village.
Now, with a large number of purpose-built greenhouses, Philip was able to grow and supply most of the fresh salad in the area. Every week, produce was grown and sold at local markets, and many Earls Barton locals worked in the nurseries at some point, helping Philip with his day-to-day duties.
When Philip’s son Michael was old enough he only had one ambition: to follow in his father's footsteps. He took over the business and in the early 1980's moved to Clay Lane in Earls Barton where polythene tunnels were built and the company growth continued.
Now a major fruit and veg supplier in northamptonshire
Today, the business is run by Michael's sons, James and Edward, who plan to keep it growing so that they can hand it on to the next generation of the White family.
Whites Nurseries is now a major player in the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, and other associated produce right around Northamptonshire, but also just across the borders into Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire.
The business has expanded too and now includes a Farm Shop selling fruit and veg, as well as all kinds of dairy produce, home-made curry sauces, pressed apple juices, local honey, cakes and ice cream, oils and preserves, and much more.
There’s also a Garden area where you can find seasonal plants and compost, garden ornaments, decorative wheel barrows, planters, wooden railway sleepers, logs, coal and kindling. The range is increasing with new products being added, many made or sourced locally.
We even have a Pet area selling a variety of pet products, including treats for dogs, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs – and feed for the wild birds in your garden.
The wholesale business is growing too with Whites supplying a variety of produce to businesses in Northamptonshire and further afield – pubs, restaurants, hotels, care homes, professional caterers, nursery schools, schools and colleges, shops and hospitals.
